Bluebeam is built around its PDF markup engine, and this is where it stands apart from a general PDF editor. You mark up drawings with tools that understand construction scale: calibrated measurements for length, area, perimeter, volume, angle, and count. The measurements snap to scale when you calibrate a drawing, so counts and quantities come from actual plan geometry rather than visual estimates.
Basics includes length and area only. Core and Complete add perimeter, volume, angle, and count tools plus custom column calculations. If your takeoff work requires volume calculations from cross-sections or perimeter-derived quantities, Core is the minimum entry point.
Bluebeam Studio lets multiple people work on the same PDF in real time. A GC can start a Studio Session where subs, architects, and owners mark up drawings simultaneously, with each participant’s annotations tracked by user. Studio Projects adds document version control, so everyone works from the same current drawing set and revision history is preserved.
Basics users can participate in Studio Sessions and Projects created by Core or Complete users, but they cannot start their own. If your organization needs to initiate and manage collaboration sessions, Core or Complete is required.

Bluebeam discontinued perpetual licenses in 2023. Revu 20, the last perpetual version, will lose support at the end of 2026.
